It is good practice to log on with Marine Rescue Jurien Bay whenever you go out, no matter how short the trip.

Logging on with Marine Rescue Jurien Bay

Jurien boat members log on with their Jurien call sign number.

Non-members should use their boat registration number as the call sign. The first time you log on with us we are required to get additional details from you:

·         Boat trailer license number

·         Mobile phone number, preferably for a phone that will be carried on board

These details are kept on file in the tower, so if you have logged on before, just mention that to the radio operator.

More details for visiting boats here Visiting Boats, as well as a form you can fill out in advance to make this process easier.

Even better, for a small fee become a boat member yourself: Boat Members.

You can log on and off either using your radio, or by phoning the Tower on 9652 1950. If using your radio, use the following procedure:

Turn your radio on and listen

First, turn your radio on and switch to the correct working channel – VHF Ch 21, ensuring that your power is set to 'High' (25 watts).

Listen for a while to make sure the radio operator is not already busy logging someone else on or off. Proceed when the channel is clear.

Establish Communications

To call, say the call sign you are calling three times, followed by your call sign three times.

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, this is (your call sign), (your call sign), (your call sign), over."

If radio reception is good, such as when you are in the marina, you can abbreviate this by only saying the call signs once.

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, this is (your call sign), over."

Log on message

The radio operator will want to know:

·         Number of adults and children

·         How much fuel you have

·         Your plan for the day

·         Your expected return time

Your plan for the day should include the general area you expect to be in.

Some examples are:

·         5 miles behind Favourite Island

·         Heading due west 15 miles from the marina

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, (your call sign), two adults, one child, 50 litres of fuel, heading due west 15 miles from the marina, returning 13:00, over."

The operator will confirm the details of your trip. If the operator does not come back to you, or the details have been misunderstood, call again or repeat missed details.

Logging Off

It is most important that you log off on your return.

Establish communications with the radio operator again.

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay this is (your call sign), over."

Wait for the operator to acknowledge your call.

"(your call sign) this is Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, go ahead please, over."

Send your log off message.

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, this is (your call sign), safely back, logging off for the day. Thanks for the coverage, over."

Wait for the operator to acknowledge your message, repeat if you have to. If you cannot contact the operator by radio, call 9652 1950 to log off.

Change of Plans

If you change your plans during the day, such as moving to a different location or extending your return time, let the radio operator know.

First, establish communications with the radio operator again.

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, this is (your call sign), over."

Wait for the operator to acknowledge your call.

"(your call sign) this is Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, go ahead please, over."

Let them know the plan.

"Marine Rescue Jurien Bay, this is (your call sign), extending our return time to 14:00, over."

Once again, wait for the operator to acknowledge your call.

You can also log on & off with us by phone - 9652 1950.
