Stay Safe when fishing for crayfish. With some fairly poor weather conditions for this time of the year over the last few weeks, Recfishwest is encouraging all crayfishers to keep safety in mind when pulling pots or diving and not take unnecessary risks.
Top Safety Tips:
1. Check the forecast before pulling your pots – particularly the swell.
2. Have someone help you lift pots and be mindful in small boats when retrieving pots that load distribution can significantly affect stability.
3. Use weighted or heavier ropes to ensure they stay below the surface away from boat propellers; and
4. When diving (scuba or free diving) always go with a friend, look out for each other, don’t push your limits and use a dive flag.
No crayfish is worth risking your life – having a feed of crays is great, but coming home safely is more important.
